Chickens for Fun and Food!

The idea of raising and keeping chickens might seem like a strange one to many Americans, since we’ve shifted so far from our agrarian roots, but more and more people are taking up this fun and rewarding hobby. A small, roosterless, flock of chickens can be clean, quiet, and produce enough eggs for your family if properly maintained.

The first thing to investigate in your quest for poultry are the laws about chickens in your area. Some towns allow a small flock of hens no problem, others require you to be situated a certain number of feet away from the nearest neighbor to preven nuisance complaints, and others forbid it alltogether. As with any local ordinance, you need to decide if these guidelines make sense, or if you can do your own thing without hurting anyone or getting fined. The key to these situations, as with many other projects, are good neighbors. If you get along well with the folks in your neighborhood you can get away with way more than if there’s someone just waiting for the opportunity to get you busted.

Talk over your chicken idea with your neighbors, first the immediate ones who might see or hear the chickens. Assure them that the chickens will be well cared for, quiet, and clean. Also, it never hurts to share your extra eggs!
