Farmer’s Markets

Farmers markets were the original grocery store, as old as agriculture itself. On a given day of the week farmers would bring their produce, meat and cheese into town and people would buy what they needed. This tradition was lost in many industrialized nations with the advent of grocery stores and supermarkets, but today is enjoying a renaissance. Farmers markets are popping up all over the country, giving customers fresh, nutritious food and a way to meet their local farmers face to face.

The WIC program offers coupons redeemable at these markets, and seniors are also eligible for the coupons. EBT cards are accepted as well, though many vendors don’t have a card reader and can’t accept them. If you find this situation at your farmers market, tell the vendors you want to be their customer, and get your friends to say the same. If a farmer knows there is a market waiting for his or her produce, most likely they will buy a scanner to win that business.
