Farm Stands

Farmstands can be the most convenient direct marketing tools farmers have. The customer comes to them and buys the produce, saving the farmer transportation costs and cutting out the middleman. Awesome!

If you’re lucky enough to have a farmstand in your area, check to see if the farm is certified organic. Small operations who sell less than five thousand dollars in goods a year don’t have to go through the certification process, but may still follow all the standards or even go above and beyond. Talk to the farmer and ask what their growing methods are, let them know you and your friends will be regular customers if they switch to organic. Remember, don’t be demanding, just ask for what you want

It’s also a good idea to check where the produce came from if you don’t see it growing nearby. Some folks truck in produce from a state or two away to fill out the selection at their stand. If you’re committed to buying only local, or as much local as possible, this would be good to know.
