rBGH is the acronym for
bovine recombinant growth hormone and to
make a long story short, it is a very bad
thing.
rBGH is a genetically engineered hormone sold by
Monsanto that some dairy farmers inject into
their cattle every two weeks to ramp up milk
production by up to 15%. There is growing
evidence for a link between cancer and milk
obtained through this method. Additionally, as
any of you who have ever nursed can imagine,
increasing the amount of milk produced to
artificially high levels is painful for the cow.
Often these cows fall victim to mastitis, an
infection of the udder, and their life-spans are
also significantly shortened.
Since the unnatural and inhumane treatment of
dairy cows creates so many infections, they are
frequently dosed with antibiotics. This overuse
of antibiotics by the dairy industry has
repercussions for our own health. Antibiotics
that used to knock out bacterial infections with
one course are now useless. There are strains of
infective bacteria so resilient now that doctors
are down to one or two drugs that may or may not
eliminate the problem. Soon those won’t work
either.
