Dairy: So Many Choices
Milk, of all things, is very confusing these
days. Should we drink it or shouldn’t we? Which
fat percentage is best for us? For our kids? Is
organic important? The list of questions is
enough to leave anyone paralyzed in front of the
dairy case, unsure of which jug or carton to
choose, or whether to drink it at all.
A large percentage of the world’s population is
lactose intolerant,
meaning that their bodies cannot digest
dairy products, this is especially common in
Asians, African Americans, and Native
Americans. If you experience stomach cramps
and bloating every time you eat or drink
dairy products, you may be lactose
intolerant.
If you have the fortunate ability to digest
dairy, here are some helpful words and phrases to
check for on your milk carton or cheese package:
rGBH free, organic, grass fed, local, and raw, in
that order. While the best choice would be all of
these, not everyone has access to fresh, raw milk
from happy cows pastured right down the road. I
hope one day soon we all will.
